Emirates Airlines has just recently announced its plans to launch direct services to Tokyo, Japan’s capital city and one of the world’s foremost economic centers. Tokyo will now serve as Emirate Airlines’ 102nd international destination, following the recent launch of operations to Durban and Luanda in October of 2009. Now with the introduction of flights to Tokyo, Emirates will be able to offer two nonstop services between Japan and Dubai, as the airline already operates daily services to Osaka.

It now seems that Emirates Airlines could be a possible bargaining chip in Dubai’s attempt to get over its mountain of debt. Economists at the French Bank, Societe Generale, have said that Dubai might have to offer Emirates as collateral in order to ensure a bailout for neighbor Abu Dhabi.

Emirates Airlines has launched their very own A380 double-decker aircraft to serve flights between Dubai and London. This plane is the 3rd out of 58 aircrafts that Emirates has on order. Even though the A380 is bigger, having over 40% more passenger capacity, it is less than half as noisy as the Boeing 747 and takes 20% less fuel to operate. Starting yesterday, the aircraft will be operating flights to London Heathrow Airport, departing Dubai at 7:45am and arriving at 11:35am.

Emirates Airlines had a net profit of about £50 million during the first half of the financial year, ending September 30th. This result is 88% less than their nearly £418 million in net profits during the same period last financial year, which shows the impact of this year’s record high fuel prices. The fuel bill of the airline doubled to about £1.6 billion during that time, which is around £301 million more than what they had anticipated. The company also reported that operating revenue increased 31% to £3.9 million.

Emirates Airlines has put phones on one of their Boeing 777-300s, which will enable passengers to make a phone call with their mobile, as well as send messages, during their flight. Patrick Brannelly, the Vice President of Passenger Communications and Visual Services for Emirates, said that travelers who book on their Boeing 777, which now has in-flight services for mobile phones, will be allowed to communicate with their business associates, friends, or family while they travel.

Emirates Airlines is planning to cut their magazines, entertainment guides, and newspapers on flights in order to save 1 ton of weight on every one of their Airbus A380 super jumbo flights. This move is aimed to help aid in the reduction of fuel emissions and at saving money on expenses. The printed materials of the airline include its radio and television guides, Portfolio business magazines that the business- and first-class passengers use, and Open Skies in-flight magazine. Emirates Airlines has announced that they plan to showcase their new, double-decker A380 on exclusive familiarization flights for Los Angeles and San Francisco. Air travelers will get the chance to experience the state-of-the-art A380 of Emirates Airlines for their first time come August 1st when the launch of the aircraft will service the Dubai to New York JFK route.  This is going to be a non-stop, 14-hour flight that will also be The Americas’ first commercial service of the A380.
