Ryanair has just recently announced that it will be doing a 40 percent cutback in capacity to its Stansted services this winter. This means the number of operational aircraft will be down from 40 to 24.
The chief executive for Ryanair, Mr. Michael O’Leary, has cited Stansted’s high passenger fees as the main reason for the big reduction. He went on to say that the increase in the airport passenger duty from £10 to £11 in November, despite the current aviation downturn, plays a role in it as well.

Concerns that the current economic crisis would mean that holidaymakers would stay at home during the Christmas season were confirmed when the British Airports Authority, the largest airport operator in Britain, reported that their passenger numbers dropped by 6.9% during the month of December in comparison to last year.

The plan for a second Stansted Airport runway has been pushed back, not to be built for nearly another decade, according to reports on Tuesday. The Civil Aviation Authority has taken the Competition Commission’s recommendation to exclude the project, which is worth £2.3 billion, from the price regime over the next 5 years until March 2014.
This decision means that the British Airports Authority, the owner of Stansted Airport, won’t have any funding from increased fees in order to finance the development work until another price regime is initiated in 6 years. The watchdog questioned the expansion’s urgency last [...]

The Civil Aviation Authority said that they are acting on the finding by the Competition Commission that the service performance of the airport has been unacceptably low at times during the last 5 years.
The British Airports Authority has already been given nearly £8 million in fines during the year after missing targets set for service, as well as for landing fees, at the Gatwick Airport [...]
