A United Airlines pilot was this week arrested for allegedly consuming too much alcohol before entering the cockpit. The arrest was the latest in a string of incidents concerning airline pilots and intoxication.

United Airline’s Mileage Plus cardholders are now able to redeem their frequent flyer points for car hire and hotel bookings.
At present the car rentals are only available in Canada and the US but the redemption and booking components can be made from anywhere in the world. United is offering car hire through partners Budget, Alamo and Dollar and customers can search through vehicles at a range of points. Starting at around 10,000 points per day, a full range of vehicles can be booked by the points system with costs varying depending on model, location and company.

As Airlines fight to lower all possible costs one recent decisions is being fiercely fought by travel agents. United has decided to pass along the credit card fees of 2%-3% of the total air ticket to 28 travel agencies. These prices have always been paid by airlines, but United has asserted that it may be time for a change. With fuel prices stabilizing, for the moment, many passengers are asking why a major US airline is raising its second-bag fees. Even though the price for fuel has dropped from a high of $147 per barrel to less than $96 per barrel in recent weeks, United has elected to raise their fees, anyway. United Airlines is going bankrupt. That’s what all the major news sources were reporting over the weekend. It seems that United was the last to know. The latest debacle in the Airline Industry began when an archived article that appeared in the Florida Sun Sentinel in 2002 was noted as the most popular story on their site. UAL Corporation, the airline holding company, announced on Wednesday that they have named Howard Attarian as the Vice President for Flight Operations. Attarian’s role will be having the responsibility over the every day operations in the Flight Operations Division of United Airlines, including flight technical, flight standards, and pilot domiciles. The second largest airline in the United States, United Airlines, is going to axe 13% of their workforce, amounting to 7,000 staff members, and shed more than 16% of their domestic routes in order to cut their expenses due to the record high fuel prices, which continue to rise. United Airlines reported on Thursday, July 3rd, that their passenger load factor declined for the month of June.  The traffic of the airline decreased by 3.6%, and the airline’s capacity slipped by 0.6%.  The airline states that the total revenue passenger miles that were scheduled decreased from £5.4 billion to £5.2 billion.  They also said that the available seat miles during last month slipped from about £6.1 billion to £6 billion.
