Virgin Atlantic yesterday announced the launch of a unique new scheme that will assist passengers to find fellow travellers to share taxis from the world’s airports into towns. The initiative will save both money and carbon emissions.
The Taxi2 website can put people in touch who are arriving at the same time or even on the same flights that have similar end destinations in mind, be it city or countryside.
Customers wishing to use the service can log on to the taxi.to website and enter their relevant information such as hotel address. The site will then find an appropriate companion.

Virgin Atlantic Airways, Europcar, Carlson Wagonlit Travel and Marriott Hotels were the big winners in the European edition of the World Travel Awards held last week in Portugal.
The awards, referred to commonly as the travel and tourism Oscars were staged at the sumptuous Marriot Praia D’El Ray Hotel and saw host the Marriott group take home top gong for Europe’s Leading Hotel Brand along with Lisbon being awarded Best European Travel Destination.

Virgin Atlantic will now be one of the first airlines to implement a joint E-ticketing system with a leading rail operator as it enables its passengers to book Eurostar tickets. In light of a new deal, passengers that enjoy traveling with Virgin Atlantic, will now be able to book Eurostar tickets for high speed travel between London, Brussels, and Paris. All passengers have to do is simply make a booking for Eurostar at the same time they are booking their air tickets for a flight on Virgin Atlantic.

Right now 600 Virgin Atlantic employees could be looking at loosing their jobs. This news comes about as Virgin Atlantic announces that it is looking to cut back on its winter services due to the economy.
The carrier said that it was going to be reducing the number of flights by almost seven percent when compared to last year. This is all in response to the falling passenger numbers. Virgin Atlantic and bmi have agreed to expand their codeshare deal on the domestic flights of bmi to Amman, Tel Aviv, Beirut, and Tehran effective immediately. Both of the carriers already hold a codeshare agreement on the services to and from Brussels, Venice, Amsterdam, Palma, Hanover, and Dublin from the London Heathrow Airport, which link to the long-haul flights of Virgin Atlantic from the airport. The long-haul flights include those from Boston, Newark, Los Angeles, and the JFK Airport in New York, which are all North American cities.

The traditional discounts on airfare for the month of January have started earnestly with many airlines joining the price war. bmi has cut their prices on several of their Middle Eastern and European flights which include Moscow flights starting at £185 and Amman flights to start at £399. Virgin Atlantic has taken a chance in forging a tie-up with bmi, a British airline, directly after Lufthansa, a German carrier, announced that they are poised to be the majority shareholder of bmi.
Virgin Atlantic’s proposal is to combine their operations with bmi for £318 million, which is a deal that may create a super-airline in Europe. Lufthansa now has an 80% hold in bmi and is anticipated to make a bid on the last 20%, which Scandinavian Airlines owns. Scandinavian Airlines has put the stake and themselves up for sale.
