The Balboa ferry has long been well known among California’s ferry riders, but today it was out of service with a 2-foot hole in its hull, the US Coast Guard says.
Luckily, the 57-foot ferry was not carrying passengers at the time of the incident. It ran aground at about 11:30 p.m. It was carrying about 50 gallons of gasoline which was removed from the boat for safety reasons. The Coast Guard said there was no sign of any pollution in the harbor.
The ferry is well known as a way to bring both cars and passengers on a quarter-mile trip from Newport Beach’s Balboa Island and Balboa peninsula back to the mainland. It has been in operation since 1919, but this is the first recorded time that it has actually run aground.
Officials from Balboa Island Ferry, and South Coast Shipyard were asked for comment, but at the time of this article could not yet be reached.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman did comment on the incident, stating that there were not any reports of flooding aboard the ferry from the grounding. Damage is severe, but there was little danger. A further investigation about the incident will proceed.
