UK consumers have acknowledged that they are ready to embrace the new revolution in electric vehicle technology. Research released today revealed that consumers across Britain have said they are ready to adopt the new eco-friendly car sharing program, but added that charging infrastructure would need to be improved.

The Smart Plugged-In report, from the Future Foundation, showed that two-thirds of British consumers are read and willing for the new program, while three-quarters agreed that fuel emissions are a concern that needs addressing – the same number who said they would play their part in aiding C02 reductions.

Commissioned to understand what the UK perceptions were in regards to electric vehicles, the Smart Plugged-In report release coincides with London’s first delivery of the Smart fortwo electric vehicles; part of the Mayor Boris Johnson’s bid to become the European leader in the field. “We are now on the brink of an exciting era of cleaner, greener electric motoring. London is already taking steps to ensure drivers in the capital will be able to embrace this new technology and plug in with confidence,” said Mayor Johnson.

Calvey Taylor-Haw, the head of Elektromotive, the group who is the world’s largest electric charging station manufacturer, said that London was the envy of its European rivals. “Britain is in the enviable position of leading the electric vehicle revolution in Europe, and the considerable momentum we have built up must not be lost. We must be prepared for the arrival of mass-produced electric cars by putting in place a suitable charging infrastructure now,” said Taylor-Haw.
