Figures released by Caravan Club show that caravan holidays have increased in popularity by some 25% over the past year.
With the unexpected surge in caravan rentals, the Road Safety Group of Lancashire’s City Council has offered timely advice for safety. Group spokesperson Alan Fisher said “Caravan holidays are a fantastic way to go on holiday without breaking the bank but before you set off it’s important that you know how to stay safe”.
Before you go there are a number of considerations, the most obvious of which is ensuring that you have the correct license for towing your vehicle. You should also be aware the reduced speed limits, most commonly between 50 and 60mph.
Checking tyre pressure and depth of tread is also recommended, along with sensible loading of heavy items over the axles and checking of weight limits. The group also suggest spending some time practising parking and reversing before you really need to.
Out on the road itself, it is important to remember the greater size of the caravan when attempting overtaking or passing through low overhangs.
Lastly, if you do begin to lose control and the caravan starts to snake, stay calm, reduce speed smoothly and loosen your grip on the wheel.
