The pay-as-you-go car hire service operated by Peugeot using their Mu vehicle program has been successfully launched in France for some time, and now UK motorists can experience the latest driving concept.

Similar to a pre-paid mobile account, the Mu system provides users with top-up options simply by visiting the dedicated website. With sufficient credit, renters can choose from numerous vehicles such as an SUV, the 207 or 308 CC, 407 Coupe and more. There is even the option to rent scooters and bicycles for the more environmentally friendly or exercise conscious, while additional extras such as ski racks and GPS can also be requested.

The theory behind the program is that owning and operating a modern car in today’s society is just too much of a hassle. Most commuters are now using bus or rail networks to go to and from the workplace leaving outings in the car often confined to mere supermarket visits. For many, the ability to rent a car for a short period of time only when needed is rapidly becoming a more practical and money-saving option. Car sharing clubs are fast proving a feasible alternative to outright car hire, particularly in areas where prices reflect the popularity of tourism.

The Peugeot Mu program is expected to be fronted by the soon to be re-released poster-car, the Peugeot Ion which is nearing finalisation. Essentially a rebadged Mitsubishi, industry analysts are watching closely to see if another Renault-Nissan alliance will take shape.
