According to one website, Simply Hired, the recession has pushed employees into traveling far out of their way to look for work. In fact, some studies even suggest that some Brits could be traveling more than three hours each way to work in order to protect their jobs.

The poll taken by Simply Hired also showed that 56 percent of respondents said they would be willing to take an increase in vacation entitlement rather than a pay rise to help keep company costs down. UK workers are doing everything in their power to make themselves more desirable to businesses.

When the workers were asked what steps they are taking to recession proof their careers, 10 percent said that they are kissing up to their boss. 36 percent of them said that they are taking extra classes to remain valuable to their company. Another 18 percent said they are working way longer hours, and this was followed by another 10 percent who are attending networking events. Of course, not everyone is worried about losing their jobs. 26 percent of the people polled said that they are not doing anything different at all to secure their jobs.

The international director at Simply Hired, Sachin Shah, said that employees are being forced to change their mindset and adapt in the same way the recession has forced businesses to rethink their operations. There is a mutual understanding that employees and job seekers need to make themselves be seen as valuable to their company in order to avoid redundancy. Many people are also pulling their purse strings tighter in order to save what little money they do have.
