The well known Unite union is currently writing to all British Airways cabin crew and criticizing the carrier’s tactics. This move comes just after British Airways made a surprise announcement to cut more jobs, working practices and pay deals. British Airways says that these new plans will go into affect November 16th. The letter, which was actually signed by Unite joint general secretaries Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson, show that crew from both sections of the union have already declared industrial action due to the changes.

The Unite union has urged British Airways’ boss, Willie Walsh, to reach a negotiated settlement. Plans to meet have been drawn up for today. British Airways announced that they are always willing to meet with the unions; there is no question about that. However, they did note that they are not willing to make any changes to their plans, stating that this is something that has to be done to save the airline. Thus, despite the talks to take place, British Airways is confident that the plans will go ahead anyway.

Thus, it looks like there could be more trouble down the road for British Airways. However, the unions are not the only thing that the carrier has to worry about. If some big cuts are not made soon, then the carrier could be looking at having to close up shop.

Of course, British Airways is not the only carrier that is undergoing hard times. Other carriers from around the world are finding themselves in the same situation due to the recession.
