Right now 600 Virgin Atlantic employees could be looking at loosing their jobs. This news comes about as Virgin Atlantic announces that it is looking to cut back on its winter services due to the economy.

The carrier said that it was going to be reducing the number of flights by almost seven percent when compared to last year. This is all in response to the falling passenger numbers. Some of the cuts that will take place include the Heathrow to Chicago daily routes that used to be offered. They will also be reducing the amount of serviced flights that travel between Heathrow and Hong Kong. This will be cut from two a day to only one.

The total number of flights that will be cut have yet to be determined. However, Virgin Atlantic did say that they know that any headcount reduction could be achieved through sabbaticals or voluntary redundancies. It did confirm that it would be talking with its workers about it shortly. It is still believed that 600 jobs are very likely to be cut due to the downturn in the airline industry.

Steve Ridgway, the Virgin Atlantic chief executive, said that the outlook for the industry is not very good. All airlines are having to cut back on their business. Only the fittest will survive and will be in a stronger position when the economy starts to grow. He went on to say that the airline does look to minimize the number of redundancies that will have to take place. They hope to treat their staff as fairly as they possibly can.
