Yahoo believes their unique design for their new data center will help in achieving the company’s eventual goal of carbon-neutral status. They intend to do this without having to resort to purchasing carbon offsets, but by using the most advanced green technology in all their buildings. After a lot of talk about airlines and carbon offsets. Yahoo decided to make waves of its own.
The new data center will use outside air to cool their many servers. This idea is supposedly inspired by common designs for chicken coops. The unveiling of the plans was supported by the NY Governor David Patterson who made an appearance at the press conference. Yahoo is attempting to patent their state of the art design.
Data centers are an integral part of Internet businesses. Many companies have started working on cost cutting and energy cutting for green concerns at these centers. These centers have thousands of servers running all day, every day. Google and Microsoft are both following suit in announcing its own high tech plans to produce data centers with heavily reduced amounts of energy.
Yahoo president David Filo asserted, “We believe creating highly-efficient data centers will have a greater long-term, direct impact on the environment and gives us the best opportunity to play a leadership role in addressing climate change,”
