A recent poll among European foodies has revealed York as the UK’s top spot for food and wine.
The news comes via a poll conducted by TripAdvisor just before British travel group Abta holds its major travel convention in Majorca. The survey revealed that London was not among the top 10 food destinations in Europe, but both York and Edinburgh were, in at fifth and 10th place, respectively.
Italian destinations dominated the list and took three of the top four positions. In first place was Florence while the second place position was grabbed by the French capital. Rome took third place followed by Sorrento and Sienna, whilst Bologna took seventh. A pair of Spanish cities –San Sebastian and Barcelona- took eighth and ninth, respectively, just ahead of Edinburgh.
Emma Shaw of TripAdvisor said that the awards recognised Europe’s top destinations for wine and food according to the responses of millions of TripAdvisor users. She added that the UK should be proud of the two spots it earned alongside tough competition among destinations long renowned among gastro tourists.
Meanwhile, Visit York’s chief executive Gillian Curddas said his group was ‘delighted’ about the news and attributed the success to a wide array of quality local food producers, markets and award-winning restaurants.
