Attractions closer to this former gold mining town include the tranquil Lake Wendouree and the medieval Kryal Castle. Curious collections of 1970s hospital items and old motorcycles are displayed alongside the castle's Middle Ages displays. Sovereign Hill, depicting an 1850s gold mining town, is a popular theme park.

Best time to visit

Ballarat enjoys four separate seasons and average monthly temperatures approximately 3°C degrees cooler than Melbourne's due to Ballarat's higher elevation in the Great Dividing Range's foothills. The winter months from May to September can be soggy and cold but still see visitors. The city receives snow only during the heaviest winters, but flurries regularly fall on the Warrenheip and Buninyong mountains. February is the warmest month and ideal for a visit, with temperatures of around 20°C.
